GO! Lady Saints, GO!!

2/4/2010

In their last home game of the 2009-2010 season, the Lady Saints have crossed into uncharted territory with their 56-49 win over Baptist Bible College.  It is the first time that the Saints  have ever beat the Lady Patriots, under Coach Anne Menear.  In addition, this win ties the record for wins in the regular season of play at 6.  One more win, and this team will have beat that record - and with 4 more games, that prize is more than a possibility.

Though the ladies are still last in the MCCC, it has been a crazy year, with many twists and turns. Proving to be a strong second half team, the Lady Saint defense has managed to keep many of their games closer than expected, and their offense seems to be just getting started in the last 10 minutes of a game.  "Many of our second half scores have been right at, or more than the opponent," said Coach Menear, in her 4th year at Central. "We don't give up, which is nice.  But it would be better if we started fighting a little sooner."

Leading the Lady Saints in scoring this year, Sophomore, Mazie Dowdy, of Eldon, Missouri is presently sitting on top of the conference stats with 18.9 points per game.  In Tuesday's game against Baptist Bible College, Dowdy scored 25 points with 16 rebounds and 5 assists.  She is presently #1 in 3-point average in the conference as well with 47.6%.  Most impressive, and the main reason for the victory over the Patriots, was her free throw average, which is 68.7% in the conference; she was  5 for 5 from the line on Tuesday night.

Not far behind, point guard, Marissa Hunter, a freshman from Fenton, Missouri is currently ranked 8th in the conference for 3-point average (39%).  Marissa "Big Game" Hunter contributed 19 points to the game against the Lady Patriots on Tuesday, giving the Saints a big boost with her 23 boards and 7 assists.

Caley Palmer, sophomore from Novelty, Missouri, contributed 8 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds in the game, and continues to move the ball well for the Lady Saints.

With four more games left in the season, the Lady Saints are excited about the prospect of adding a few more wins to their record.  The women head to Omaha, Nebraska on Saturday, February 13 to face Grace University.
